چکیده

We present high angular resolution Submillimeter Array observations of the outbursting Jupiter family comet 17P/Holmes on 2007 October 26–29, achieving a spatial resolution of 2.5, or∼3000 km at the comet distance. The observations resulted in detections of the rotational lines CO 3–2, HCN 4–3, HCN 4–3, CS 7–6, H2CO 31,2-21,1, H2S 22,0–21,1, and multiple CH3OH lines, along with the associated dust continuum at 221 and 349 GHz. The continuum has a spectral index of 2.7±0.3, slightly steeper than blackbody emission from large dust particles. From the imaging data, we identify two components in the molecular emission. One component is characterized by a relatively broad line width (∼1 km s FWHM) exhibiting a symmetric outgassing pattern with respect to the

SuperWASP observations of the 2007 outburst of Comet 17P/Holmes

We present wide-field imaging of the 2007 outburst of Comet 17P/Holmes obtained serendipitously by SuperWASP-North on 17 nights over a 42-night period beginning on the night (2007 October 22–23) immediately prior to the outburst. Photometry of 17P’s unresolved coma in SuperWASP data taken on the first night of the outburst is consistent with exponential brightening, suggesting that the rapid in...

Large Excess of Heavy Nitrogen in Both Hydrogen Cyanide and Cyanogen from Comet 17p/holmes

From millimeter and optical observations of the Jupiter-family comet 17P/Holmes performed soon after its huge outburst of October 24, 2007, we derive 14N/15N=139±26 in HCN, and 14N/15N=165±40 in CN, establishing that HCN has the same non-terrestrial isotopic composition as CN. The same conclusion is obtained for the long-period comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) after a reanalysis of previously publis...

Cometary Orbit Determination and Nongravitational Forces

The accuracies of the orbits and ephemerides for active comets are most often limited by imperfectly modeled rocket-like accelerations experienced by active comets as a result of the outgassing cometary nucleus near perihelion. The standard nongravitational acceleration model proposed by Marsden et al. (1973) has been updated by allowing the nucleus outgassing to act asymmetrically with respect...

Evolution of Comet Nucleus Rotation

The secular evolution of comet nucleus rotation states subject to outgassing torques is studied. The dynamical model assumes that the nucleus inertia ellipsoid is axially symmetric. The outgassing torques acting on the surface are modeled using standard cometary activity formulae. The general rotational equations of motion are derived and separately averaged over the fast rotational dynamics te...

Active regions on the surface of Comet 43P/Wolf-Harrington determined from its nongravitational effects

The nongravitational perturbations in the motion of the periodic comet Wolf-Harrington are investigated during its nine observable apparitions in the period 1924–1998. To explain the irregular variations in the nongravitational acceleration, two different models are considered and successfully used to link all the apparitions: a) Model of nucleus with the activation and deactivation of discrete...
